[PRESS RELEASE] Enhancing Indonesian Policymakers’ Proficiency in AI, CfDS UGM Earns WSIS Prizes 2025 Nomination through AI Policy & Skilling Lab

Yogyakarta, 23 April 2025 – The initiative by Center for Digital Society (CfDS) UGM, in collaboration with Google Indonesia and KORIKA (Collaborative Research and Industry Innovation in Artificial Intelligence), to enhance AI literacy and policy capacity among policymakers has earned a nomination in the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) under the ‘Enabling Environment’ category. The WSIS Prizes are annual awards presented by the UN’ International Telecommunication Union (ITU), recognizing innovative programs around the world that leverage information and communication technologies to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

With the rapid advancement of AI, a deep understanding of its foundations and implementation has become increasingly important, especially in the realm of public policy. The AI Policy & Skilling Lab was established to address this, aiming to strengthen the capacity of government institutions and policymakers in understanding and implementing AI in an inclusive and responsible manner.

Launched in December 2023, the program has conducted four training sessions involving over 400 participants from 35 ministries and state institutions. The program adopts an informative and deliberative multi-stakeholder approach and is designed to equip participants with analytical skills through methods such as pre-tests, AI 101 classes, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), and post-tests. The training focuses on four key areas: Cybersecurity, Education, Disaster Mitigation, and Economic Opportunities.

Executive Secretary of CfDS UGM, Syaifa Tania, stated that the complexity of AI as a disruptive technology demands policies that balance innovation with risk mitigation. “This program is a manifestation of our commitment to promoting responsible AI utilization and supporting positive transformation in Indonesia.”

Head of KORIKA, Prof. Hammam Riza, added that the training is expected to enhance the quality of public services through the application of AI by civil servants. Meanwhile, Putri Alam, Director of Government Affairs & Public Policy at Google Indonesia, highlighted that the program has also been replicated in other countries in Southeast Asia as part of the regional effort to build an inclusive and ethical AI ecosystem.

The AI Policy & Skilling Lab by CfDS UGM represents Indonesia alongside 11 other programs, having been selected from over 1,000 global initiatives. Public voting to determine the winner or champion will be open until May 1, 2025, at 04:00 AM WIB. Support from all parties during the voting process is key to ensuring the success of Indonesia’s flagship programs on the global stage.
