Yogyakarta – Amidst the massive use of digital applications and website access, the elements of user interface and user experience (UI/UX) have become crucial in developing a digital product. These components facilitate user interaction with digital products, thus building user trust and company reputation. Recognizing this, the Center for Digital Society (CfDS) presents a practical UI/UX design workshop in Digital Practice #8: “UI/UX Essentials: Basic Beginner’s Guide to Digital Design.” Ardhani Putra Wiratma, UI/UX Designer at RupaRupa (Kawan Lama Group), served as the speaker moderated by Hanny Handayani, Graphic Design Assistant at CfDS.
Basic UI/UX Concepts
Opening the training session, Ardhani explained the fundamental concepts related to UI and UX. UI focuses on enhancing the appearance of a digital product interface, while UX refers to the feelings and experiences users have when using that digital product, with a focus on creating satisfaction. “These two aspects are certainly related to each other, specifically to facilitate new users in interacting within digital platforms,” emphasized Ardhani. Good UI/UX design must consider several principles, such as clarity, consistency, feedback, flexibility, and efficiency.
Through this process, developers of digital platforms can easily determine the elements used. These elements include: First, color theory that influences the entire user experience. The right colors can create visually appealing designs. Second, developers should support the user experience aspect in terms of typography, which is then addressed with layout elements to arrange design elements. Finally, the selection of icons to represent visuals for actions, objects, and specific concepts, serving as reinforcement for branding consistency.
Creating User Experience Design
Starting with the creation of an engaging UX design, Ardhani emphasized the importance of strategic user research. “To provide an engaging user experience for digital product users, developers must prioritize user research methods focused on understanding user behavior,” he said. This research is conducted through observation techniques, task analysis, and feedback methodologies. This needs to be done to reconcile the different perspectives, including those of new users, thus fostering innovation. This method is carried out in three stages: at the beginning of the period through in-depth interviews and competitive analysis, in the middle of the period through usability testing methods, and after release through product analytics usability testing.
Ardhani also directly demonstrated UI/UX design and usage through Figma. According to him, the use of this application is proliferating because besides its easy operation, digital product developers don’t have to pay a penny. This tool can be used for wireframing, UI design, and prototyping.
“UI/UX is an important integrated entity that cannot be separated. This service is present to solve existing problems in human life, such as Gojek, which is the result of simplifying the idea of motorcycle taxi fares from one area to another,” Ardhani concluded his training session.
Supporting digital transformation and increasing digital literacy and skills among the public, CfDS is committed to organizing similar activities. Through Digital Practice, CfDS will always actively provide space for the public to develop their digital skills.
