[PRESS RELEASE] Encouraging Environmentally Friendly Technology Innovation for a Cleaner Future Through Green-Tech | Difussion #99

Yogyakarta, (8/14/2023) – After the post-pandemic, the resumption of normal human activities has resulted in increased air and water pollution, especially in densely populated urban areas. However, over time, awareness of these negative impacts has been on the rise, marked by a push for investment and innovation in technology sectors focused on environmental sustainability. In response to this, the Center for Digital Society presents two experts in the field of environmentally friendly technology: Dr. Hasrul Hanif, M.A. (Lecturer in the Department of Politics and Government at UGM) and Nur Setyo Adi Widodo (PV Engineer at LEIN Power Indonesia). The discussion is moderated by Rizka Herdiani (Research Assistant at CfDS) in Diffusion #99 “GreenTech: Environmentally Friendly Technology for the Future.” You can watch the discussion on CfDS UGM’s YouTube channel through the following link: Difussion #99 “GreenTech: Teknologi Ramah Lingkungan untuk Masa Depan”

Green Technology Policy in Indonesia

Green technology, often referred to as “Green tech,” is a nature-based solution that embodies innovation and dedication to reducing negative impacts on social and environmental sectors. It not only prioritizes energy efficiency but also encourages the use of renewable resources and recycling technologies to bring about positive changes to the planet. This technology encompasses electrification, carbon capture, fuel technologies, and much more.

“Indonesia holds a strategically important position in implementing green technology. The country has the potential to develop renewable energy sources such as solar energy and bio-energy. However, the crucial question is, who is green technology intended for? We must have clear regulations regarding diversification, whether for entrepreneurs or the welfare of the community,” said Hasrul.

Unfortunately, this situation is exacerbated by the fact that technology is currently being used as a tool in political contests. This can be seen in the absence of incentive policies for green technology due to the strong political influence of players who favor the status quo and the policymaking process. For example, Presidential Regulation 112/2022, excludes Coal-Fired Power Plants (PLTU) for the benefit of national strategic projects.

Environmentally Friendly Technology with New Renewable Energy Usage

Green tech has emerged in response to the adverse effects of human activities on the environment. Therefore, in 2015, at the UN Climate Change Conference COP21 in Paris, President Joko Widodo made a global commitment on behalf of Indonesia to minimize the environmental impact of energy technology use to keep global temperatures from exceeding 2°C. This commitment is enshrined in Law No. 16/2016 regarding the Ratification of the Paris Agreement to the UNFCCC, affirming Indonesia’s commitment to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions by 214-445 million tons of CO2 by 2030 through various efforts, including the development of renewable energy.

Strategies initiated through policies and regulations on renewable energy in Indonesia include decarbonization through energy conservation intensification and the utilization of New Renewable Energy (EBT), decentralization through the integration of Decentralized Autonomous Power Systems, digitization through the convergence of power system technology with information and communication technology – IoT, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence (AI).

“In addition, the energy transition must also involve solar energy, given the enormous potential for solar energy in Indonesia. This can be achieved through Solar PV Technology and more. However, there is a recent innovation, namely Energy Management System (EMS) Technology applied to the Demo Plant of SSMG through collaboration between BPPT and Kyudenko Corporation,” concluded Nur Setyo.
