[PRESS RELEASE] Closing out 2023, CfDS delves into the dynamics between technology, society, and the evolving digital landscape in daily life | Difussion #104

The development of technology has changed many dynamics of social life, influencing how communities interact, work, and even think. This integration has certainly produced positive outcomes reflected in advancements in various sectors, such as communication and education. However, all these conveniences come with challenges and risks. Therefore, the Center for Digital Society (CfDS) at UGM, as an institution focusing on various contemporary issues in the digital field, presents Diffusion #104 titled “State of Arts: Technology and Society”. The discussion is accompanied by Amelinda Pandu Kusumaningtyas (Research Coordinator at CfDS) and Alfredo Putrawidjoyo (Research Officer at CfDS), moderated by Rafly Shofian Noor (Community Outreach Assistant at CfDS). This event can be viewed again through the CfDS YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5zbJvNukMo

Digital Access Rights Seizures

One of the challenges faced globally in 2023 is the internet shutdown affecting 2.5 billion people worldwide. Ethiopia, particularly in the Amhara region, experienced a communication blackout coinciding with government aggression against the Tigray ethnic group. This situation worsened as the government restricted access to social media apps related to Orthodox Church conflicts. Meanwhile, in Gaza, Palestine, Israel restricted internet access since October 2023, resulting in an 80% decline in internet traffic, especially after attacks on telecommunication infrastructure and power outages, hindering vulnerable groups from communicating and receiving external aid.

Elsewhere, Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, rebranded as “X,” exacerbates the situation. Loose content moderation and the re-platforming of controversial figures can lead to misinformation, as previously seen during the COVID era when distinguishing between information and misinformation was crucial. “Technology was initially designed to address societal issues; however, excessive use can yield negative consequences. For technology to be beneficial, transparency is essential to ensure its proper utilization,” Amel emphasized.

Relevance Between Technological Advancement and Societal Life

The social phenomenon is caused by the increasing development of technology each year. A concept highlighted by German scholars termed “social innovation re-politicization Nexus” illustrates how digital technology is often perceived as an innovation, potentially leveraged more effectively. Unfortunately, behind this progress, significant tensions arise between techno-nationalism and trade. For instance, Indonesia faces a significant dilemma: while keen on becoming an ASEAN market leader, it enacts protectionist policies to safeguard domestic markets, evident in efforts like the TikTok Shop closure.

Similarly, Germany navigates dynamics resembling those of Indonesia, balancing between protectionism and techno-nationalism. This underscores that in the age of globalization and digitalization, nations strive to preserve national interests while adapting to the dynamic global technological shifts. Alfredo concluded the discussion by stating, “Technology profoundly impacts various societal layers, bringing about positive changes. However, it’s essential to acknowledge that certain countries explicitly restrict access for specific groups due to power and structural reasons.”
