In this digital era, LinkedIn has become one of the essential tools in the professional world. This business and career platform offers numerous benefits to its users, both individuals and companies. Recognizing these opportunities and compelling trends, the Center for Digital Society (CfDS) at UGM organized an online workshop titled “Digital Practice #5” with the theme “Resume & LinkedIn: Winning the Digital Job Game.” Comprehensive in nature, this workshop provides participants with an understanding of how LinkedIn can help them build and maintain a wide-reaching professional network. Azzahra Saffira Pradita, CEO of Upgraze, served as the speaker for this occasion, with moderation by I Komang Restu, Partnership Assistant at CfDS.
The Role of LinkedIn as a Professional Social Networking Platform
Azzahra initiated the training session by discussing a platform that combines the concepts of social media and job portals, facilitating workers in connecting, networking, and interacting professionally. One of these platforms is LinkedIn. This professional social media can connect colleagues and professionals based on their relationships. Due to its usefulness, there has been a 59% increase in LinkedIn users during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, as revealed by Azzahra. “To date, there is a noticeable trend in recruitment behavior that increasingly considers how job candidates utilize this LinkedIn social media,” concluded Azzahra.
Modern recruiters also ‘take a look’ at the LinkedIn profiles of potential employees to assess their qualifications. It’s undeniable that an attractive and informative LinkedIn profile can create a positive first impression with recruiters. This can include using a professional profile picture, using headline keywords that represent the user’s profile, providing a concise summary of educational background and compelling work experience, and more. These elements should impress readers, especially recruiters. Therefore, LinkedIn users should stay aware of their current career positions and their field of expertise.
Building Personal Branding Through a Professional Personal Background
Creating an impressive LinkedIn profile should be accompanied by the selection of relevant information to build personal branding. Users can contribute informative content related to their fields, share portfolios, and review experiences from various events they have attended. The productivity of LinkedIn users in these aspects will increase their chances of catching the attention of recruiters.
To support the strength of their personal branding, LinkedIn also offers a feature for creating a curriculum vitae (CV) with a format that can be easily detected by applicant tracking systems (ATS). This feature is useful for professionals who need CVs for various purposes, such as event committee applications, job applications, and even scholarship applications. This uniqueness is valuable for users of this platform because it enhances the effectiveness and efficiency of completing their professional administrative documents. “We must understand the factors that can enhance the value of our CVs or resumes, such as maximizing the use of keywords or buzzwords that ATS can detect. It’s also important to remember that everything in the CV must be based on facts,” concluded Azzahra to conclude her training session.
This training received positive responses and enthusiasm from the participants. CfDS hopes that the intended outcomes of this training will provide long-term benefits for all participants to apply their knowledge and skills in using LinkedIn effectively.
