[PRESS RELEASE] 2023 Digital Intelligence Courses: Supporting and Accelerating Digital Talents in Indonesia

Yogyakarta, August 29, 2023 – If we look into the significant impact that technology has made, its development undeniably has a great potential to enhance Indonesia’s economic growth. Unfortunately, this is not fully supported by the quality and the skills the Indonesian people have, which is caused due to a gap in possessing digital skills. Furthermore, this also has turned the landscape of work and education to be not inclusive.

Thus, Center for Digital Society (CfDS) UGM, the Ministry of Communication and Informatics, Cybercreation, and the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, present the 2023 Digital Intelligence Courses. Through “Acceleration of Indonesia’s Digital Talents through an Inclusive Education Program”, this program seeks to increase digital literacy and tackle the skills gap in Indonesia’s educational landscape. This year, we are collaborating with Election Corner, Algohub, Algorand Foundation, and IBF Net to facilitate students with various types of classes, particularly related to digital issues.

The class was opened by Wawan Mas’udi (the Dean of Fisipol UGM) along with Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan (Director General of Applications and Governance of Informatics, Kominfo RI) with his opening remarks. Moreover, there was also a talk show inviting preeminent speakers namely Rizki Ameliah (Digital Literacy Coordinator, Kominfo RI), Agung Tri Nugraha (Research Manager, CfDS), Muhammad Andriansa (Algorand Community Champion, Algorand Indonesia), Danang Giri Sadewa (Influencer) and moderated by Benyamin Imanuel Silalahi (Researcher, CfDS).

Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan highlighted how digital literacy is a basic skill that must be owned by all people to optimally utilize the development of technology. It has been said that no one should be left out in supporting Indonesia to enhance and strengthen digital competency in our nation.

Through his speech, Wawan Mas’udi also added how UGM, as an educational institution is increasing its community’s digital literacy and digital skills by providing various choices of courses enhancing digital skills, one of which is Digital Intelligence Courses. “Digital transformation is not only limited to the way we only use it as a “tool” but also having a digital mindset that can increasingly support the use of this technology,” said Wawan.

From the government perspective, Rizki Ameliah explained that Kominfo RI had contributed to support the quality growth of digital talent. “To support the development of Indonesia’s digital talent, it’s undeniably we need to boost digital literacy first. In Indonesia, we have 77% active internet users, 60.4% social media users, and an average screen time of 6 hours 37 minutes/day. Thus, we cannot work alone to successfully create digital talents in Indonesia. To enhance Indonesia’s digital competitiveness, we focus on the digital infrastructure, digital government, digital economy, and society”.

This is in line with what Agung Tri Nugraha said regarding the digital talent acceleration agenda in Indonesia. “We place humans as the center of digital transformation itself. Indonesia’s digital literacy index is still around the average. Aspects that need to be addressed are infrastructure mapping, for example, the equality of accessing 4G in all regions. This digital acceleration has also been considered as one of the most important aspects by number of platforms and educational institutions, one of which is CfDS,” said Agung.

Muhammad Andriansa as the representative of Algorand Industry also enriched the discussion by explaining the role of the sector of industry in supporting society’s digital competitiveness. “It’s undoubtful that digital talent is needed by the industry. The potential that Indonesia has is enormous, not only as a market but also as a producer, and it’s shown by the data. Now, we at Algorand want to go hand in hand with formal education and industry to create a program to support the acceleration of digital talent. Collaboration is a must at this time,“ explained Andriansa.

As a young content creator who actively participates in using media and technology, Danang Giri also sees a huge digital potential from these aspects. Danang said, “Social media is one of the tools that can be used by everyone. We need to be digitally savvy to be able to tap into the incredible potential that technology serves. The choice is in our hands, we must be able to go beyond with the technology itself”.

CfDS along with Fisipol UGM hope that the implementation of MKKD can contribute to the acceleration of digital talent in Indonesia. We provide a place to learn for everyone, including students and the public with easier access, and not limited to support and collaborate making Indonesian people more digitally competent.
