Ed Sheeran Becomes the All-Time Top Artist on Spotify Indonesia

Previously we have identified the top songs on Spotify Indonesia, which you can check out here. Now, we are going to find out the artists whose songs have been played the most by Indonesians.

We’ve collected streaming data from the Spotify chart, starting from December 30, 2016 to August 8, 2019. Based on the data from Spotify, each version of a song is credited to only one artist even if the song has multiple lead artists. An example of this would be ZAYN and Taylor Swift’s “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever,” where the song’s streaming number is only added to ZAYN’s total as he is the one that gets credited by Spotify chart.

That being said, we can see that Ed Sheeran has accumulated the highest streaming numbers in Indonesia with nearly 165 million streams. Other Western artists on the list are Alan Walker (2nd), The Chainsmokers (3rd), Ariana Grande (6th), and Marshmello. Two Korean artists have secured their position in the top 5, with BLACKPINK on 4th and BTS closely behind on 5th. In addition, there are also three Indonesian artists in the top 10, with Fourtwnty, Rizky Febian, and Sheila On 7 coming in at 7th, 8th, and 9th, respectively.

Notably, there are only two female artists in our Top 10 list: BLACKPINK and Ariana Grande. This further confirms the domination of men on Spotify, where its year-end lists of most-streamed artists had been all men with just one or two exceptions.

If we are looking at the week-to-week streams of these top 10 songs, we can see that there are notable spikes from some of these artists. Let’s take BTS for instance. BTS gained significant streams on the week of September 15, 2017; May 18, 2018; August 24, 2018; and April 12, 2019. It turns out that on these weeks, BTS released new materials (BTS’ releases in chronological order: Love Yourself ? ‘Her’, Love Yourself ? ‘Tear’, Love Yourself ? ‘Answer’ IDOL Official MV, and MAP OF THE SOUL: PERSONA Boy With Luv Official MV)

Ariana Grande, BLACKPINK, Alan Walker, and Ed Sheeran also have notable bumps. Ariana Grande released her latest album “thank u, next” on February 8, 2019. BLACKPINK released their mini-album “Kill This Love on April 5, 2019. Alan Walker released his song “On My Way” as the official theme song for the PUBG anniversary on March 21, 2019. And finally, Ed Sheeran released his “No.6 Collaborations Project” album on July 12, 2019. These cases show that there are some artists with a huge fanbase that is able to drive significant streams on the release week of a new song or album.
