Press Release: CfDS CEOtalk #3 “Industrial Revolution 4.0 and The Future of Our Energy”

The rapid development of digital technology makes this digital age known as “Industrial Revolution 4.0”, which demands innovations in strategic sectors, such as the energy sector. Without undergoing responsive and adaptive transformations, companies risk not being able to maintain their business model and prevent technological disruption. In response to this phenomenon, PT Pertamina (Persero) as a state-owned energy company and Center for Digital Society (CfDS) Fisipol UGM initiated CEOTalk # 3 titled “Industrial Revolution 4.0 and The Future of Our Energy”. For the third time, CfDS has brought a CEO from renowned Indonesian companies.

The third CEOTalk presented President Director of PT. Pertamina (Persero), Elia Massa Manik, and was held Tuesday (12/09) at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences UGM. This event was aimed to provide participants with insights on how PT. Pertamina (Persero) responded to the wave of industrial revolution 4.0. This event also provided information about technological developments in the upstream to downstream production process in the energy sector, as well as its distribution.

“Energy is the key driver of the economy … If the cost increases, it will be hard for the industry to be competitive […] Therefore energy management is key in managing a nation. (Adopting) technology can make management easier and affordable.” As Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), Mr. Elia Massa Manik, stated.

As a company that plays an important role in sustaining national energy, PT Pertamina (Persero) has adopted innovations to cope with technological development. The company has been adding more varieties, for example with the addition of Pertalite fuel (which has a research octane number (RON) of 90 the launch of BrightGas 5.5 (which is deemed to be a more environmentally friendly and efficient variety of LPG), and others. Furthermore, PT. Pertamina (Persero) is also accelerating the adoption of application-based innovations and systems that can be utilized by consumers, which include Pertamina Go, Online Ordering, Channel Engagement App for gas stations, and others.

“In the energy sector, there will also be a shift in behavior. Thus, it is important to adapt to the changes in order to survive. […] Especially since energy sector is a high-risk industry. Just one mistake can be harmful to Indonesia” said Mr. Massa.

With the emergence of the digital transformation in business, PT. Pertamina (Persero) has intended to reorient its future planning to emphasize on technological progress. Furthermore, PT. Pertamina (Persero) has initiated technological adoption to further develop various sectors, ranging from oil refining sector, oil and gas inventory processing, to digital marketing. As a company that has been engaged in the energy industry, the orientation towards the fourth industrial revolution will further strengthen Pertamina’s independence as a National Oil Company (NOC) worldwide.
