Discussing about Film Piracy in Digital Era, Digitalk10 CfDS Presents The Chairman of Parfi 56

The ease of internet access and social media makes the spread of information faster and wider. Movie piracy thus becomes a challenge for the Indonesian film industry, especially Parfi 56 as the organization that copes Indonesian film actors and actresses. Parfi 56 brings one mission to educate people to love Indonesian movies and encourage people to be proud of using original products. Digitalk #10 with the theme of "War on Film Piracy in the Digital Age invited Marcella Zalianty as a speaker. Her expertise as a speaker is based on her backgrounds as an actress, The Chairman of Parfi 56 and also The Chairman of Kadin Indonesia Creative Industry Working Group.

The event which was held in Fisipol UGM was guided by Fairuz Mumtaz moderator who is also Literacy Media Radiobuku Activist. Fairuz divided the discussion sessions into two sessions; the first session talked a lot about Marcella Zalianty’s role as The Chairman of Parfi 56 and the development of Indonesian films as a whole. The event opened with Marcella’s explanation of the progress and changes of Parfi 56 and its influence in embracing Indonesian actresses and actors.

“Parfi 56 is there to bring awareness to be involved in the organization among artists. We want to embrace them to have a shared place. Our members are evenly spread across all ages, from the oldest like Tio Pakusadewa, Ray Sahetapy, to the youngest like Prilly Latuconsina. We do hope that we will be able to embrace all circles of society as well. ” explained by Marcella.

Session one ended with a casual question from moderator Fairuz to the participants responded to various foreign films that began to enter the Indonesia cinema.

“What’s the latest movie in theaters?” asked Fairuz

Apparently, there are still many young children who love Indonesian films. Marcella appealed for Indonesian films to succeed in their own country.

The second session opened with an explanation of the vulnerability of movie piracy in the digital age. The number of sites provides free movie download service makes people then reluctant to watch the original movie in theaters. Marcella emphasized the need for collaborative action between government, community and film campaigners to combat piracy.

“The state should have an active role, not burden the complaints to film producers,” she said.

Two of the biggest problems that occurred in Indonesia is the price of expensive cinema tickets and the lack of movie theater in small towns. Those problems are the external issue to be solved together. Meanwhile, to overcome the internal problems derived from community factors, Marcella has been working with Bekraf (Badan Ekonomi Kreatif) to educate people to stop watching pirated movies jointly.

“One of the main problems is the lack of infrastructure, namely the lack of cinema.

So the issue of piracy is a parallel issue. Therefore, we encourage the government to open the movie cinema level 2. Cinema level2 is the cinema that offers affordable tickets and strategic locations. But our problem is the investors, a problem to be solved with the cooperation of government and community of film lovers,”  Marcella explained.

Question and answer session are enlivened by enthusiastic participants. In closing the session, the moderator asked Marcella’s wish as The Chairman of Parfi 56 as well as a public figure to the government.

“I have a dream for Indonesian films to be played in our own country. There should be political will from the government. “
