The era of digital disruption has brought changes upon the whole aspect of our lives, especially in the labor sector. Moreover, in this pandemic, the role of technology along with the platforms within are necessary for developing individual skills and capability. Therefore, Center for Digital Society (CfDS) collaborated with BukitVista to hold Digitalk #45 titled “Elevating Talent Management through Technology Innocation”. This Digitalk presents two speakers, Jing Cho Yang as CEO of Bukit Vista and Kharisma G. Arafani as the Human Resource Director of Bukit Vista. The event is being held on 15 January 2021 and broadcasted live through YouTube.

The Role of Technology in Elevating Talent Management

In the first leg of the discussion, Jing Cho Yang as the CEO of Bukit Vista delivered his presentation on the importance of 5 steps of the employee journey in a company. These 5 steps are: awareness, intent, evaluation, onboarding, and retention. This whole aspect is interconnected and complementary to each other, as a way to create the utmost working experience for the employee. To maximize this employee journey, Bukit Vista also applied the role of technology innovation in several aspects, such as conducting BV E-Talk by inviting speakers from various backgrounds to increase awareness and employee’s capability, utilizing Google Analytics to analyze data and website maximization, and also using applications, for example Slack for team coordination and communication, Trello for project management and Tableu to analyze data and progress of an ongoing project. Jing stated that “Someone will not develop their skill sets fully if rely entirely on one resources. It must be supplemented with feedbacks to bridge the gap of the learning process and complete the understandings.”

Self-Development and Online Learning Platform

In the next session, HR Director of Bukit Vista, Ara, delivered 3 tips which can be applied to ourselves in order to elevate our competences, which are growth mindset, self-learner, and bias to action. The mindset to always learn, nurturing curiosity coming inside ourselves, and jumping into action without hesitation are important matters to develop ourselves continually. Besides, it is also important to understand self-potential and talent as a crucial factor to be successful in work, which can be supported by learning materials from various platform suited to our interests and potential.

In this pandemic time, online learning platform is the most popular alternative to hone our skills. Jing mentioned that if we want to obtain full-length and comprehensive courses, then paid platforms such as LinkedIn Learning and MasterClass is the best options out there. Generally, free platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, or Facebook can be the point of references to learn many things, but it takes a content filtering process to truly obtain the materials needed. Therefore, self-investment through buying books and subscribing to paid platforms are necessary in times like this and also bring long term benefit. The next session is continued by question about how to response to the gap that may exist in learning practical or conventional skills through online platform. Jing commented that practical skills such as cooking, acting or negotiating can be learned online, but it needs to be practiced in real world also. Jing emphasized on the importance of feedback cycle, where after learning and practicing certain knowledge, feedback from others on that particular knowledge is crucial. Feedback here functions much like examinations in school, where someone’s competence is being assessed and feedback is expected to bring positive impact for upgrading and improving this learned knowledge. Therefore, technology has an influential impact in the development of someone’s capability and knowledge, that it must be utilized to the fullest possible extent to improve oneself.
