[PRESS RELEASE] Convention on Cybersecurity 2018: Strengthening the Readiness and Strategy in Anticipating Cyber Threat in Indonesia

Behind the digital transformation driven by the development of the internet, there lies a huge threat of cybersecurity threat. Indonesia as one of the countries with highest internet users is also a potential target of the cybersecurity threat. Hence, Center for Digital Society FISIPOL UGM organized the ‘Convention on Cybersecurity 2018’ on Friday, 7th December 2018 at FISIPOL college, Universitas Gadjah Mada. The speakers of the convention are:

  • Mayjend TNI (Mar) Dr. Suharyanto (Deputi Pemantauan dan Pengendalian Badan Siber dan Sandi Negara) sebagai keynote speech, kemudian pembicara panel yakni
  • Agung Nugraha S.IP, M.Si (Han) (BSSN),
  • Ir Riki Arif Gunawan, M.Sc (Kemenkominfo),
  • Kombes Pol Rickynaldo Chairul (Bareskrim POLRI),
  • Pudja Unggul Kartiman (CISCO),
  • Ardi K. Sutedja (Indonesia Cyber Security Forum),
  • Dr. rer. nat I Made Wiryana (Universitas Gunadarma).
  • Guntur Dharma Putra M.Sc (moderator)

Mayjend TNI (Mar) Dr. Suharyanto, in his presentation, explained that the concept of national security has been expanded to the realm of cyber world as a response to accommodate the digital development. The government of Indonesia is now focusing on establishing sovereignty in the cyber sphere, which is implemented through the national cybersecurity strategy.

In the cybersecurity discourse, cyber threat does not only include a semantic problem or negative content on the internet, but it also covers an attack to the technical infrastructure and program. All of the speakers agree that there is a knowledge gap among the Indonesian society regarding the discourse of cybersecurity. From the academic perspective, it is quite hard to conduct educational transformation to accommodate cybersecurity in the near time due to lack of human resource availability.

Therefore, all participants in the panel discussion come into an agreement that we must develop a collaborative, multi-stakeholder approach to strengthen the cybersecurity field in Indonesia; be it from intelligence partnership, policy formulation and also program harmonization and coordination. Ir. Riki Arif Gunawan, M.Sc from KOMINFO once again stresses the importance of national cybersecurity strategy as a main reference to strengthen cybersecurity in Indonesia.

After the panel discussion, the event was followed with two parallel class session. There are two class, which are “cybercrime and its law enforcement in Indonesia” delivered by Satriyo Wibowo from ICSF, and “personal data protection on digital interaction and platform” delivered by Donny Budi Utoyo from ICT Watch. The sessions were joined by approximately 50 public participants.

The Convention on Cybersecurity 2018 is a sign of CfDS’ commitment in strengthening the discourse of cybersecurity in Indonesia. In line with other participants, we strongly agree and will give its full support to develop multi-stakeholders partnership in Indonesia to provide more benefits and solutions toward establishing a safety cyber sphere for Indonesia in welcoming its digital transformation.
