“Perfect” Becomes the Most-Streamed Songs on Spotify Indonesia

Spotify officially made its entrance in Indonesia on March 30, 2016. Since then, Spotify has grown its user base rapidly, as being shown in our previous analysis here. And although Indonesian songs gain more streams as the consumption of music on Spotify increases, the most popular ones are apparently still dominated by songs from Western artists.

In this article, we are going to look at the top 10 most-streamed songs on Spotify Indonesia. We gathered official weekly chart data from Spotify, starting from December 30, 2016, to August 8, 2019.

From our analysis, we find out that 9 songs in the top 10 are by Western artists, while only 1 is a non-Western song. Ed Sheeran dominates the list with two songs on top. Perfect, which was released in March 2017 as a part of Ed Sheeran’s third studio album, tops the ranking with 37,216,399 streams. This number excludes its various remixes and versions, such as one with Beyoncé that would add almost 9 million streams to its total. Alan Walker also bags two top 10 songs with On My Way and Lily.

Alan Walker’s feat is quite impressive, as these two songs have only started gaining streams since earlier this year. From the figure above, we can see that On My Way, and to a lesser extent Lily, started to skyrocket on the chart since March 22, 2019. This is in parallel with the use of On My Way as the official theme song for PUBG’s 1st-anniversary event, which was held in March 2019.

Another interesting finding from the chart is the longevity of H.E.R. and Daniel Caesar’s Best Part. The song was released in 2017 and its streaming numbers have always been consistent, reaching the 300,000 mark almost every week ever since. Its longevity is also reflected from its biggest week (February 8, 2019), where the song only reached 595,640 streams. This is a much smaller number in comparison with the other top 10 songs, where they gained more than 750,000 streams during their peak. It shows that Best Part’s impressive streaming number is due to its longevity and consistency on the chart rather than temporary hype.
