Social media has been used as an alternative platform for expression since its creation. However, in the last few years, governments have attempted to manipulate social media to drive agendas, influence voters, and shape the course of politics in general. This manipulation dealt a considerable amount of damage to democracy and internet freedom, where half of the world’s internet freedom declined in 2017.
